Hermandad

Anchor 1
History

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University by four trailblazing Latina women. Our Founding Mothers Cynthia Santiago, Adriana Zamora, Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quiñones, and Carol Elizabeth Torres sought to create an organization that would not only serve as a voice for women in an academic setting, but would also provide sincere sisterhood and unconditional support while actively promoting academic achievement, service to the community, and cultural enrichment.

Though Latina based, Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is not Latina-exclusive, and takes pride in serving as a non-discriminatory organization made up of women from all cultures, creeds, disabilities, political beliefs, and sexual preferences.

Goals &
 Ideals
SISTERHOOD/HERMANDAD

Sisterhood is the foundation of our Hermandad, holding us together through our ideals of Sincerity, Loyalty, and Unity. Our relationships inspire us to work collectively in improving our communities, and empower us to become leaders both at the collegiate level and in our professional careers.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE/EXCELENCIA ACADEMICA

Academic excellence is crucial for one's personal and career development. As a result, our organization fully encourages academic excellence, monitoring and supporting the academic progress of our undergraduate Hermanas. Our focus on academic excellence has lead to a significant improvement in our Hermanas' GPAs as well as increased the graduation rates within our active chapters.

LEADERSHIP/LIDERAZGO

Leadership has been described as the "process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task." Through empowerment and support, our organization strives to create leaders in our communities.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND CAMPUS/ SERVICIO A NUESTRA COMUNIDAD

We believe that every individual has the capacity to influence others. As a result, we devote ourselves to serving our campuses and communities by giving, serving and volunteering. Our service is not only impactful, but also contributes to feelings of personal fulfillment and joy within our Hermandad.

CULTURAL ENRICHMENT/ ENRIQUECIMIENTO CULTURAL

Our culture defines our past, embodies our present, and influences our future. We support and encourage each Hermanas to discover, preserve and endorse the wealth of all ethnic backgrounds in order to preserve the richness of our traditions and expand our knowledge of other cultures. This is evident through our on campus programs, national events, and daily interactions within our organization and beyond.

Our Ideals are Sincerity, Loyalty and Unity.
